RETURN OF THE RUMMAGE SALE!! The Rummage and Better Sale will be taking place this fall as a fund-raiser for the church and a service to our community. Sale dates are set for Thursday October 23rd, Friday October 24th and Saturday October 25th with set-up activities running from Sunday October 19th to Wednesday, October 22nd. Sign-ups are on the rolling bulletin board and donations are now being accepted. Ask Toni Thompson or Muriel Gabbey for more information.

The congregation is encouraged to bring in underwear and outerwear, as part of our Undie Sunday mission project to benefit the elementary school children at Rochester City School #33. A collection bin will be set up from October 5-19 in Fellowship Hall for new underwear in children’s sizes 4-14 and/or new or gently used hats, mittens, gloves and coats (size 4-14). Thank you for your support!

DO YOU HAVE OLD SWEATSHIRTS THAT ARE READY TO BE TOSSED? Bring them in to Children’s Chapel!! During October, we’ll be making no-sew winter hats out of old sweatshirt sleeves to give to our “neighbors”—the children of School 33—to help them stay warm this winter. We’re looking for donations of old sweatshirts (children’s large or any adult size) to get us starred. We’ll be collecting these sweatshirts today. Thanks for your help!

GENERATION TWO. Please consider becoming a volunteer for Generation Two. Generation Two creates a foundation for learning in elementary schools, helps decrease school absences, and promotes enthusiasm for learning among children who like school the least. G2 needs volunteers to play with 1st grade students. This is not a tutoring program. These are normal kids in regular classrooms in the Rochester City and Fairport School Districts. Volunteers meet once a week throughout the school year. The time commitment is 2 hours per week. Full training and ongoing support is provided. No special skills needed. IN THIS AGE of natural disasters and injustice, it’s refreshing to be reminded that ordinary people still can make a difference in the world. That reminder comes in the form of a new documentary called “Connecting Threads.”
The video is the latest documentary produced by the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ. It will debut on NBC TV stations nationwide starting on Oct. 5, 2008. “Connecting Threads” shows viewers how ordinary people are sharing their talents and time to work with others for a better world.
“It's not often that we have an opportunity to take a trip around the world in less than an hour,” says the Rev. J. Bennett Guess, head of the UCC’s communication department. “'Connecting Threads' enables viewers to experience diverse people, landscapes and religious perspectives; while being reminded that the Christian faith is global in its reach and inclusive in its mission." The documentary takes viewers to Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Southern Asia, East Asia and the Pacific, and the Middle East and Europe. “Watching ‘Connecting Threads’ brings the voices and lives of our global neighbor’s right into our homes and hearts,” says Jan Aerie, a spokesperson for Global Ministries, a shared world ministry partnership of the UCC and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). SUNDAY DINNER MINISTRY COORDINATOR NEEDED FOR NOVEMBER 30! Each fifth Sunday of the month, our congregation hosts one of the Sunday dinners for members of the community. These dinners serve the purpose of fellowship for those who are alone. Dinners are also delivered to those who are unable to get out.
A coordinator is needed for the November 30th dinner. The coordinator will work with the volunteers to serve this meal. The procedures and practices are in place so there will be “starting from scratch”. Others will be available to work with you. If you feel God calling you to this one time opportunity, or you have further questions please speak with Joe Charles, chair of the Board of Missions, or Jim Franzen or Melissa Tieslink.

They were kind enough to loan out their books and magazines to some of the attendees. Unfortunately these materials have not been returned to them. If you have one of their books or magazines about South Africa, please return it to them or Muriel Gabbey as soon as possible. Thank you!

CASA LARGA TOUR AND WINE TASTING First Church is sponsoring a winery tour and tasting fundraiser/silent auction at Casa Larga Vineyards on Sunday, September 28 from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. Join us for a great afternoon where we'll see the winery "in action" during the grape harvest and sample some of the Finger Lakes finest wines. Silent auction items include music/entertainment devices and vacation get-aways. Casa Larga is located at 2287 Turk Hill Road in Fairport. Tickets are $25/person or $45/couple. COFFEE-FULL STRENGTH is now being sold in Fellowship Hall during fellowship time as a youth mission trip fundraiser. A cup of java is $1. A bag of ground or whole bean fair trade coffee is $12. Our mission trip market-place will also be selling beautiful 2009 calendars, environmentally-friendly cloth bags and entertainment books. Check it out!

THE PERINTON FOOD SHELF NEEDS FOR THIS MONTH: canned fruit & fruit juices, jello & puddings

HELP WANTED: The Perinton Food Shelf needs volunteers for basic cleaning at the Food Shelf and for packing and delivering food to the needy in the community. If you are interested, please call the Perinton Food Shelf at 425-7410.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION SCHEDULE FOR TODAY: Preschoolers - Junior High School will be focusing on the 10 Commandments. Senior High will start a new Bible Study. Adults will discuss the role of faith in politics in "Jesus for President." See CE bulletin board in Fellowship Hall for today's room assignments.

CHILDREN’S CHAPEL is available for young children who may have a difficult time sitting through the worship service. It is offered in the Snow Room every Sunday when Christian education classes are held. Children should go to the Snow Room following the pastor’s “Children’s Message”. Parents can pick up their children after the worship service.

RETURN OF THE RUMMAGE SALE!! The Rummage and Better Sale will be taking place this fall as a fund-raiser for the church and a service to our community. Sale dates are set for Thursday October 23rd, Friday October 24th and Saturday October 25th with set-up activities running from Sunday October 19th to Wednesday October 22nd. Sign-ups are on the rolling bulletin board and donations are now being accepted. Ask Toni Thompson or Muriel Gabbey for more information.

SUNDAY DINNER MINISTRY COORDINATOR NEEDED FOR NOVEMBER 30! Each fifth Sunday of the month, our congregation hosts one of the Sunday dinners for members of the community. These dinners serve the purpose of fellowship for those who are alone. Dinners are also delivered to those who are unable to get out.
A coordinator is needed for the November 30th dinner. The coordinator will work with the volunteers to serve this meal. The procedures and practices are in place so there will be “starting from scratch”. Others will be available to work with you. If you feel God calling you to this one time opportunity, or you have further questions please speak with Joe Charles, chair of the Board of Missions, or Jim Franzen or Melissa Tieslink.

THE YOUTH GROUP would appreciate the donation of a used couch or loveseat for the Senior High Classroom. It must be 80 inches or less across. Please contact Karen Hamill, Kelly Weidman or Jim Franzen.

ATTENTION!! Monica Viljoen and Deirdre Eaton graciously presented materials and a lecture to the Women’s Circles of our church. They were kind enough to loan out their books and magazines to some of the attendees. Unfortunately these materials have not been returned to them. If you have one of their books or magazines about South Africa, please return it to them or Muriel Gabbey as soon as possible. Thank you!

EVENING CIRCLE will start their new program year with a Potluck Supper on September 15th at 6:30 PM in Fellowship Hall. Janice Coon will demonstrate how to create a Fall Arrangement with natural media. At the end of the evening this arrangement will be raffled at $1 per ticket. Come join the fun!!

CASA LARGA TOUR AND WINE TASTING First Church is sponsoring a winery tour and tasting fundraiser/silent auction at Casa Larga Vineyards on Sunday, September 28 from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. Join us for a great afternoon where we'll see the winery "in action" during the grape harvest and sample some of the Finger Lakes finest wines. Silent auction items include music/entertainment devices and vacation get-aways. Casa Larga is located at 2287 Turk Hill Road in Fairport. Tickets are $25/person or $45/couple.
