News in the Pews Weekly Bulletin

August 16, 2020

EPISTLE DEADLINE:  The deadline for the upcoming Epistle Newsletter is Thursday, August 20th.

RE-OPENING UPDATE:  The current date for our church to return to in-person worship is September 13. Leading up to that date our Re-Opening Committee (David Coon, George Dorr, Ed Johnston, Greg Rupright, Diana Smith, Doug Strong and Heather Watras) is working through all of the New York State and UCC guidance to insure that we maintain the health and safety of all members and guests who enter our church. The list of requirements is lengthy and includes items such as physical distancing, protective equipment, cleaning, screening and contact tracing. Ultimately, we must document our "Business Resumption Plan" and submit affirmation to the State that all requirements have been met. For our worship service we anticipate the requirements will impact, to name a few, how we enter and leave the building, how we move around and sit in the sanctuary, singing, communion, and fellowship. More information about the specific changes you can expect will be shared during August as we continue to work through the process. In the meantime, feel free to contact anyone on the Re-Opening Committee if you have any questions.

CORONAVIRUS PROCEDURES CONTINUE:  Out of care for one another we are continuing to keep "social distancing." Public Worship Services continue to be suspended until further notice and the building remains closed to all meetings and activities. All Church Boards, Committees, and Church Council will conduct meetings via Zoom or email. Our leadership has opted for an extended reopening time to ensure the safety of our church members. COMMUNICATION: The leaders of our church will keep you posted via the weekly News-in-the-Pews, church-wide emails, The Epistle newsletter, and our church’s website on our reopening status. WEEKLY WORSHIP SERVICE: We continue to provide a 9:30 am live-streamed Worship Service on our Facebook page. Here is the link: (you do not need to join Facebook to view the service). PASTOR’S VACATION:  Pastor Greg will be taking vacation August 25 – September 1.

THE 8TH ANNUAL STEP UP FOR SENIORS WALK to benefit Fairport Baptist Homes (FBH) will take place on Saturday, September 26. FBH has been serving seniors of all religions and their families for more than 100 years. Funds raised will continue to help area seniors through programs like rehabilitation, skilled nursing, assisted living, senior housing, and special events. Pastor Greg has again volunteered to captain the "First Congregational UCC Team," and he, Jill O’Connor and Pat and Bill May would love to have many church members join us on the Walk! If walking is not “your thing” or if you’ll be unavailable on the 26th, we encourage you to “Sponsor” our Team by making a financial donation. Many of our members were very generous in their support last year making our church one of the largest fundraising groups in the Walk! Please contact Pastor Greg (585-966-9416 or if you’d be willing to lend your support by walking or have questions. If you’d rather donate, please send your checks directly to the church. Checks should made out to “FBH Foundation (walk)” and post-dated September 26, 2020. Many thanks for your consideration!

ATTENTION GOLFERS!  Announcing the upcoming 28th Annual Advent House Charity Golf Tournament on Friday, September 18, 2020 at Victor Hills Golf Club starting at 12:00 noon. The $125 registration includes 18 holes of golf, golf cart, lunch all day, souvenir gift, beverages, contests, reception, raffles, awards, and prizes. Please note that there will not be a dinner following the golf in 2020 due to the covid-19 virus and our concerns over social distancing after the completion of golf. Entry forms may be obtained from our website: or by calling the Advent House at 223-6112.

THE ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL PROGRAM MEETING POSTPONED:  Circumstances have forced us to reschedule (again) our Annual Meeting to September. The Annual Report packet has been prepared and emailed to you for your review. Until we meet, please review the 2019 – 2020 Annual Report, and don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions. Several of our Boards have openings (notably, Worship Ministries, Christian Education, Family Ministries and Membership) and I encourage you to seriously consider joining one of these important groups. In addition, Azanda Donaldson’s term as Treasurer comes to an end in May 2021, so the need has become critical to have an Assistant Treasurer who can take over next spring. PLEASE consider your ability to fill one of these important positions.

CHECK OUT PASTOR'S BLOG:  Pastor Greg is doing a weekly Pastor's Blog Bible Study & Reflections on our church's website during this time of social distancing. The Pastor's Blog will be posted each Thursday. Check out and click on Pastor's Blog.

STEWARDSHIP:  With Church Services on hold we still need your support. I know I will miss the chance to put in the weekly envelope. Well here is some good news! We have a variety of ways to continue our support. You can mail a check to the church covering your regular pledge amount or use your own bank’s online bill-pay feature. Alternatively, you may use the “Donate” tab on our church website (note: PayPal charges a fee for the website payments). Or you can transfer Stock (you may want to let the market bounce back first). Whatever way you choose to continue your support know that our church family appreciates the ongoing support! Thank you. ~Brad Bowersox, Stewardship Chair.

FACE MASKS ARE STILL AVAILABLE:  If you need a face mask to be safer during the Corona virus pandemic, we have some available for free at church. They are 100% cotton, with a wire across the top to mold to the bridge of the nose. They have elastic that goes around the neck and the top back of the head. They have a pocket for a filter. The CDC says that coffee filters work well. To sanitize after use, machine wash and tumble dry. If you need a fabric mask, please email Vicki Sherry at or call the church at 585-223-0224 and leave a voice message (include your name, address, phone number, and the number of masks you need). Pastor Greg or Jill O'Connor will deliver the mask in a Ziplock bag to your porch.

LIGHT THE NIGHT:  Thank you to Pat and Bill May for keeping the steeple lights burning bright throughout the month of August in memory of Sean May.
